Vermiculite is a special fire-resistant material made of pressed stone-granules. The blocks are insulators and help to maintain a high temperature in the combustion chamber. Vermiculite is a very porous material that is sensitive to impact and must therefore be treated with care. It is relatively easy to replace the plates yourself.
