Replacement of wear and tear parts

Every stove has various wear and tear parts that you can reasonably expect to have to replace during the stove’s service life.

Vermiculite plates

The combustion chamber is lined with vermiculite plates (also known colloquially as skamol). Vermiculite is a special fire resistant material made of pressed stone-granules, resembling chipboard. The plates isolate and help to maintain high temperatures in the combustion chamber, while preventing holes being burned in the upper section of the stove.

Vermiculite is a very porous material that is sensitive to impact and must therefore be treated with care. This means you should not throw firewood into the combustion chamber, as this can cause the plates to break. Cracked plates are no reason for concern, but if cracks are larger than 5 mm or pieces have broken off, it is important that the plates are replaced. It is relatively easy to replace the plates yourself.

Gaskets

VARDE gaskets are made of woven glass strands. They help to seal the stove, to ensure that air circulates in the right direction inside the stove. A wood-burning stove with airtight gaskets will burn cleaner and burn less wood.

Stove gaskets are wear and tear parts and should be inspected at least once a year. If the gaskets have white stripes at the glass or door, this is a sign that they are worn out and should be replaced. Depending on how much you use your stove, gaskets should last two to five years.

The ash pan gasket should be secure and provide an airtight seal all the way around. A good way to ensure that the gasket is intact, is to put a lit torch in the ash pan and close it. If light is emitted from the closed drawer, this is a sign that the gasket should be replaced.

 A sealing cord is wrapped around the pipe to the chimney. If the pipe is loosely seated, you should replace the gasket to prevent false air from entering the system by this route. This will reduce the output of the wood-burning stove.

If your stove is not burning clean, the door is not sealed properly, which makes airflow management difficult. This can also be an indicator that the gaskets are worn and should be replaced.

Replacement of gaskets and removal of old ones is a task you can perform yourself. Start by removing the old gasket and glue residue, perhaps using a screwdriver. Install new gasket by applying the glue and then lightly pressing the gasket together, aligned towards the door.

Glass

VARDE wood-burning stove glass panes are made of an especially heat-resistant ceramic glass, which can last for many years of use. Should you be unlucky and the glass pane of your stove is damaged, panes are relatively easy to replace.

NB! Do not over-tighten screws and glass clips. If over-tightened, the glass will shatter.
